With school finishing up for me in June, the girlfriend and I are gearing up to move far away from Chicago, getting jobs lined up and such. In with that comes figuring out what to do vehicle-wise. I currently have an '01 Buick Century with 104k miles, which would be fine as a last choice, but we're really looking to upgrade.
Since our destinations range from Alaska's Southern peninsula, to New Mexico, Washington, etc., the upgrade needs to be reliable and moderately fuel-efficient, since we'll be driving from Chicago. It also needs (preferably) to be AWD or 4x4, since the roads in the areas we're looking at are not always in the best shape (not that Chicago streets are any better). Budget is probably getting capped at $10,000- selling or trading in my current vehicle + some money down + financing the rest will be the most likely route.
Would love this, but would not love driving it cross-country on the highway
My current thoughts have been a Subaru (and she has always wanted one), Toyota pickup, Ranger, or something along those lines. Definitely don't want to get into anything with high miles either (Yes, I know a Subaru will run "forever" but you and I both know the commitment that takes).
Your help and suggestions are what I'm seeking- any and all are appreciated!
And, of course, let me know if you're interested in a beige-painted, beige-upholstered, beige-trimmed, beige-mobile.
EDIT: Manual is a must for me (she could take it or leave it) and cruise control is a must for her.

my dads got an '01 century, get a trailer. he's a driver, too & pulls 27-29 mpg averages. when you get to where you're going there sohould be a fine selection of stuff worth gnabbing. i dig the beasty subes. don't hate, but i've got a plan for filling an early cr-v with awd & a nasty n/a screamer. which wheels ya got?

I thought about that trailer idea, but I'm really itching to upgrade anyways. Plus, buying a trailer, fitting a hitch, and taking a MPG hit is money I'd rather put into a vehicle. I'm also playing around with picking something up where we settle, since it has a better chance of being rust-free, but that doesn't really solve the problem easily.
CR-V isn't a bad idea, I just can't bring myself to buy a CUV.

good point. 2nd suggestion: 2007+ crown vic swap in a 5 speed. and there has to be a 32v 5.4 from a navigator in a junkyard somewhere.

Since you're in Chicago, I went on your local autotrader and found
this!
This would probably be the perfect car for your move

New Mexico is a bad choice. Subaru is a good choice. (The Land of Enchantment will not be good to Chicagoans. Shit, we can't get rid of the frickin New Yorkers). :)

Ha! Why the Northerner hate? Most of the places we've looked at working are seasonal/resort/ranch establishments, which bring in folk from all around the country, so I'm not too worried.

While that sounds like a blast, it also sounds like too much work and too much potential for error/breakdown. I mentioned a Crown Vic, but we're both sort of bored with sedans!

Definitely on the list. That's what we're leaning towards, though 2000 is as old as I'd like to go. It's a pretty hard-to-beat choice.

I chose it due to the miles, and due to it being one owner
didn't look through the carfax, though

Yeah, mileage is usually my first filter after price. Sifting through Subie ads is quite the task.

3rd times the charm: acura zdx. kinda ugly, but kinda awesome.

Oh shit, the hunt is on. That's actually the only Acura I like nowadays, just because of how weird it is.

Did Honda ever make a wagon with AWD?

Just fucking with ya. I do it with everybody. We would welcome you with open arms. I am a native northerner, as well.

Haha, good to know! Where are you from?

I refuse to acknowledge the existence of that car. Though I assume it's the same thing as the ZDX, essentially.

Having moved from Buffalo to Denver with a whole house of stuff...I can advise to sell as much of your stuff as you can first. Nothing is more annoying than furniture with no place to go or wont fit or having too much stuff that you never needed. Sell it and buy what you need back off craigslist.
Enjoy a good move. I suggest Around Denver. Yeah.

Born in Chicago, grew up in Michigan.
